Chapter 16

We saw his leg first. The light began a few inches over the floor, and he stumbled out of it, and almost fell on his face. He managed to keep his balance, though, and straighten himself just seconds after we could all see him, as clear as we could see each other.

And the reflection behind him disappeared into thin air.

Philip looked different from the first and last time I’d seen him. He looked younger. There was no longer a beard on his face, only clean, smooth skin. His hair was combed back, too, and he wore a plaid shirt with brown trousers, and shoes that looked brand new.

He looked around at the many shocked faces watching him, a bit confused, a bit excited—until his blue eyes found me.

“Elo!” he said, raising his hand in a wave. “So good to see you!” And he started walking toward me, right through the middle of the room. If he noticed that there were armed fae and elves all around him, about to attack one another, he wasn’t bothered. His smile stayed on his face, pulling up my own.

I didn’t know what was happening, or what was going to, but I knew for a fact that it wasn’t going to be all bad.

“Philip,” I said, a bit breathless. “Wow, you…it’s good to see you, too.”

Elf soldiers stepped forward, their weapons raised his way before he reached me. I raised my hands to tell them to stand back. He wasn’t an enemy. I don’t know why it didn’t even occur to me that he could be working for the sidhe, or even the Guild. I just wanted to hear what the Believer had to say.

“Fancy place you got here,” he said, waving his finger around the room. “Oh, there’s Faceless!” His cheeks burned bright red. He waved at Faceless, who was no doubt as stunned to see him as I was. “I’m sorry if this is a bad time. I didn’t realize you had guests over.”

I shook my head, unable to stop smiling. “No, it’s okay, Philip. How did you get here? How…” I didn’t even know what to ask him.

“I Believed I was going to see you tonight,” he said with a nod and only then began to notice all the men and women wearing armors who surrounded us. His smile faltered and his brows narrowed. “Am I interrupting something?”

“This is outrageous!” King Aurant called, his strong voice almost shaking the walls of the castle.

“You are going to die first, Lady Heivar. For humiliating us in this manner, you good-for-nothing cow!” Lord Rowen shouted.

My eyes closed involuntarily. Once more, my magic left my fingers. As much as I was happy to see the Believer, now was not the time. “Philip, I must ask you to—”

But I never got the chance to finish. Philip had already turned toward Lord Rowen, and he watched him in disbelief.

“That can’t be right, sir,” he said, completely serious, too, his voice sharp. “That was awfully rude and inappropriate. That is no way to speak to a lady.
